Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world” James 1:27

A wonderful door has opened for us to reach out to the kids at the Salvation Army in Pietermaritzburg and the teenagers at the Pietermaritzburg Children’s Home.

So far we have the opportunity to spend time with the kids on a weekly basis, every Wednesday. On these days we aim to take about twenty young rugby players from the Midlands Rugby Academy to play games and sports with the kids and also just to befriend them.

We hope that the social and spiritual attention the kids receive will boost their morale just a little bit more. In the process we pray the rugby players develop hearts of compassion as they serve. We also hope that our service will create more exposure for the two homes to receive assistance from other sources who become aware of the work.

These institutions are in great need. Although the homes try their best too meet all the needs of the kids (physically, emotionally, and spiritually) it is not always possible. We are trying to stand in that gap.

One example of such an effort is hospital visits. Sometimes orphans get sick and have to stay over in the hospital. Since they don’t have parents and staff cannot always be there they often sleep over alone. To see a four-year old stay over in a place like a public hospital alone can be very daunting. That is where we come in. It is Alfrieda’s passion to spend the night with such kids. When the opportunity arises Alfrieda therefore makes herself available and goes to be a mommy for the child while in hospital.
